SEPA – Payments in Lei
In 2008, the banking community in Romania adopted the SEPA payment schemes for payments in the national currency. By adopting the SEPA Schemes for payments in lei, the banking community in Romania aims to standardize payment flows in lei and euros, automate and facilitate IT connections with corporate clients with a stable information structure, develop means of payment in accordance with European standards and adopt their large scale, but also the reduction of the investment and operational pressure determined by the adoption of the euro.
- SEPA RON credit transfer scheme – starting from September 2, 2012
- SEPA Direct Debit Schemes RON (Basic Scheme and B2B Scheme) – starting from April 12, 2016
- The Single Register of Mandates – Optional additional service for SEPA RON Direct Debit Schemes, starting from April 12, 2016
- Instant SEPA RON credit transfer scheme - starting from April 22, 2019
- Beneficiary Name Display Service (SANB) - starting from 28.10.2022
- SPL scheme (Standardized Proxy Lookup) RON - starting from March 18, 2021
The Romanian Association of Banks, based on the mandate received from the Central Bank, has taken over the role of governing authority for SEPA Payment Schemes for lei payments. Thus, starting with 2014, the Department for the Management of the National Payment Schemes of the Romanian Association of Banks has been conducting audit and control missions regarding the application of SEPA Schemes for domestic currency payments in the credit institutions and the payment institutions from Romania which adhered to these Schemes.
